Clear Stenographer Skill Test in First Attempt- SSC Stenographer Results Declared
Results for SSC Stenographer Written Test 2017 are out. The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) holds an entrance exam every year to fill the vacancies of stenographer for Grade C & D in various government Departments. The test was conducted online from September 11-14, 2017 all over India. Around two lakh candidates appeared for this test out of which 8,469 candidates have cleared the written test for SSC Stenographer Grade C and 15,004 candidates have cleared for Grade D. SSC fixed the cut off based on vacancies, number of candidates and performance of candidates in the written test.
Candidates who have successfully cleared the first level of written test will now appear for skill test. SSC can propose qualifying marks for each segment of the test. Different category of candidates will have different qualifying standards for the skill test. After the skill test, merit list is released and candidates who qualify will have their names in that list in accordance to the marks obtained by them.
Recommended candidates get posted to various departments on the basis of the merit achieved by them. Skill test will the last round of selection, though all the candidates who will clear this test will have to undergo a medical test. After serving two years of probation, one can get a confirmation on the job as a SSC Stenographer. While in probation all candidates are required to get strong hold on Hindi as well as English language stenography.
Skill Test is conducted for candidates after clearing written test. In this test all candidates will be given one dictation for 10 minutes in English or Hindi with a word count of 80 words per minute (w.p.m.) for the post of Stenographer Grade D and 100 words per minute for the post of Stenographer Grade C.
Candidates will have to write the transcripts on computers itself. However if a candidate is well versed with shorthand writing technique then he/she can first note down the dictation in shorthand on a paper and then later type it on the computer. Grade C candidates will get 40 minutes for English typing and 55 minutes for Hindi typing on computer. Grade D candidates would get 50 minutes for English typing and 65 minutes for Hindi typing on computer. Normally the council gives 5-7% relaxation for mistakes depending on the category of the candidate. Omission of a word, substitution of a word, addition of words are considered mistakes. Whereas spelling errors, usage of singular on place of plural or vice versa, wrong use of capital letters, spacing, ambiguous typing can be taken as half mistakes. These guidelines are set by SSC.
Staff Selection Commission has made it mandatory for candidates of all categories to appear for skill test if they want to be recommended on job as a SSC Stenographer. Skill test is of qualifying nature and you have to complete the test within the given time limit. As you know, there is dictation in English and Hindi languages that the candidate has to transcribe on computer. So, make sure not to miss out on any word or sentence and be very attentive. Secondly, practice shorthand writing skill.
After the dictation is done with, you will need to transcript the noted dictation in computer. Practice with a conventional typing preparation to increase your typing speed. For the skill test exam, you will need to type only in one language out of Hindi or English whichever you chose, so focus on brushing up typing skills for the chosen language. English typing is easy and you should achieve a speed of 25 w.p.m. for grade C and 16 w.p.m. for grade D by practice. Hindi typing is difficult so it is suggested you practice Hindi typing regularly to attain speed and accuracy.
Last Minute Tips:
- Practice shorthand typing. You can find many guides available online for the same.
- Memorize the keyboard so that you can build the speed by typing not looking at the keyboard and focus only on the screen.
- Always type full words and use all fingers while typing.
- Do not use dictionary predictions for spell checks and try to memorize spellings.
- Take mock dictations at home and evaluate your listening and shorthand technique.
- Download Hindi keyboard and practice typing with speed and accuracy for spellings in Hindi.
- Practice at least for two hours a day.
It should not be very difficult to clear Skill Test if you prepare with dedication. The future prospects in terms of promotions are very limited for a SSC Stenographer, but yes to attain higher cadre positions, one can give internal departmental exams. If you are able to successfully clear these internal exams consecutively, then you will be able to change your job profile and grade as well.
